Holy Days of Obligation
In the Roman Catholic Church, all Sundays are considered Holy Days of Obligation. It is a chance to refresh our spirit, renew our commitment and reconnect with the Lord Jesus in the celebration of the Mass. In Canada, all days of obligation, such as Epiphany, have been transferred to Sundays with the exception of two:
– Christmas Day on December 25th
– Mary, Mother of God on January 1st
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Roman Catholics have a unique love and reverence for the “real presence” of Christ in the Eucharist (the sacred host). Eucharistic Adoration, then, comprises the exposition of the sacred host outside the tabernacle for public adoration. It can be as simple as keeping the tabernacle doors open, or removal of the sacred vessels from the tabernacle for a more prominent and visible placement. The Church also permits a “full” exposition, when the sacred host is clearly visible in a vessel called a “monstrance”. Often the hour spent in adoration of the holy eucharist is marked by quietude, calm music, reflection and prayer. See the Bulletin and Calendar for scheduled Expositions of the Blessed Sacrament.
